Periodical Cicadas

 

I've only seen periodical cicadas once in my life, for the emergence of Brood X in southeastern Michigan.  Fortunately, there were some at Schroeter Park on June 15, 2021, but they were nearing the end.  Many were on the ground and had been infected by Massospora cicadina, a fungal pathogen that only infects 13- and 17-year periodical cicadas.  I'd estimate about 75% of the ones we could see on the ground and in the bushes, were infected.

   

 

Here are a few that did not appear to be infected.  The photos in the third row show a mating pair.

   

 

   

I brought several near-death cicadas home to photograph on flowers from my house and garden.  Luckily, I didn't waste any time taking their photos because several hours later, they were already dead.  As they start to die, the bright red of their eyes starts to turn brown.  This is most evident in cicada 3 below.
